Mosque of Dar al-Islam

History

History

Built between 1980 and 1982 by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, with the help of two Nubian master masons, the Mosque of Dar al-Islam uses traditional Nubian vernacular techniques: rammed-earth bricks laid without wood or steel framing. It is the only constructed work by Hassan Fathy in the Western Hemisphere.

It is part of Dar al-Islam, the first planned Islamic community in the United States, co-founded in 1979 by American convert Nuridin Durkee, Sahl Kabbani and Abdullah Omar Nasseef. The original project called for a school, dormitory, hammam and hotel; from 1990 onward, the mission evolved into an educational centre organising retreats and courses on Islam.
