This quiz is free, with no account to create and no intrusive advertising. It runs directly in the browser, on phone as well as computer, and works both solo and with several players on the same screen, each answering in turn.
Three themes, three levels of difficulty
Islam and its Prophet gathers questions on the foundations of the religion and on the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), in the Sunni tradition: the five pillars, the chronology of the revelation, the Hijra, the earliest communities. It is the most accessible theme to begin with.
Famous mosques covers the monuments presented on this site, from Masjid al-Haram to the Great Mosque of Djenné. You will find questions on dating, architecture and geography. It is the most visual theme, and the one where reading the pages pays off fastest.
The Prophets of Islam deals with the figures recognised by the Islamic tradition, from Adam to Jesus (peace be upon them), their Quranic accounts and the links between traditions. It is the most demanding theme.
How the questions are built
Each question offers four options and a single correct answer, followed by a short explanation shown after you answer. Where relevant that explanation cites the sura and verse, or the date and place concerned. The aim is not to trick you but to teach something with every question, including the ones you get wrong.
Questions relating to religion follow the Sunni tradition, which is stated in the theme heading. Those about monuments draw on the pages of this site, themselves verified and sourced. No question deals with points of controversy between currents.
Playing alone or together
Multiplayer runs on a single device, passed around between turns. You pick the number of players, each enters a name, and scores are kept separately. It is designed for a family evening or a group activity, with no shared connection and no app to install.
The number of questions per game is adjustable: ten for a quick round, fifty for a long session. Questions are drawn at random within the chosen theme, so two consecutive games never look alike.
Getting better between games
The best preparation for the mosque theme is reading the pages: the twenty mosques presented here cover most of the dating and style questions. The blog goes deeper into cross-cutting themes, from the earthen architecture of West Africa to the Ottoman mosques of Istanbul.
For geography questions, the 3D Hajj map lets you follow the pilgrimage route, and the compass gives the direction of Mecca from your position. Finally, the Series section explains why every mosque in the world faces the same point, which sheds light on several questions in the architectural theme.
